The best way to describe how Wo Long feels is if you combined the visuals and swordplay of the Dynasty Warriors and Nioh games with a pinch of Sekiro. What then happens is that you have a game that is quite difficult, but oh-so-rewarding when you conquer the seemingly impossible.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dark fantasy take on the Three Kingdoms. The difficulty is high, almost seeming insurmountable at first, but part of what makes Wo Long great is how the difficulty isn’t unfair. The gameplay is structured where players are rewarded for learning the fighting style of their enemies and using their mastery of their own skills against them. It can be frustrating and requires patience to master, but it’s such a great feeling to finally overcome a strong adversary. Challenge alone does not make a game great, but Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty excels in every area from artistic design to gameplay mechanics. Watching nameless warrior execute their different moves is akin to a ballet of brutality. The gameplay mechanics are are smooth and responsive as the game is challenging, making it a joy to invest the time in mastering the battle system. This isn’t the Three Kingdoms setting we were expecting, but it is the Three Kingdoms game we needed.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a powerful action game that introduces a new gameplay experience with its core combat mechanism of parrying. This game reinterprets the history and characters of the Three Kingdoms period, providing a surprising experience for Chinese players. However, the game's map design has some flaws, and the endgame content is also lacking. These issues prevent Wo Long from being a perfect gaming experience. However, we hope that future DLCs will fill these gaps and address the shortcomings in the game's content.

Team Ninja shows its best side. In Wo Long there are still some of its common problems, but the result is a remarkable Soulslike.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is the latest Team Ninja game and it is a good counterpart to Nioh games even if its more Sekiro than Dark Souls. Brutal combat and good level design are there but some caveats are going to be thorn in the eye for the veterans of the genre.

Team Ninja delivers a new hardcore ARPG with some unusual but solid new features that change what we are getting used to. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is a real breath of fresh air in a genre that count many new titles now.

Wo Long is a hair's breadth from cohesiveness, but much like the game's antagonists, it slips through your fingers just when you think you've got it. Come on, Team Ninja. You've almost got it.

In nioh 2, the studio was cearly coming into their own and the game was just short of amazing. It had a lot more flexibility in play style, and the gameplay was a lot less action focused, with more to explore and do. Additionally, it was much easier, and where I couldn't finish nioh, I had little trouble getting to the end of nioh 2.

This game feels like a step backwards. The exploration is a lot less rewarding, the combat is much more minimalistic, and the challenge is turned up to 11. Perhaps for some diehard action junkies this will hit the spot, but I have no desire to force myself to use the unforgiving parry system, so this is a pass from me.

I am honestly stunned that this game is somehow managing an 81 average score on Metacritic. I have played hard games before. The SoulsI am honestly stunned that this game is somehow managing an 81 average score on Metacritic. I have played hard games before. The Souls Trilogy, Sekiro, Elden Ring, beat all of them more than once. Loved them, except for Elden Ring. Then comes along Wo Long, a game that is yet another addition to this now bloated genre without anything that makes the Souls games good and features some of the most idiotic, braindead game design I've ever witnessed in any video game.

The game has tons of weapons with a flashy combo system, but what's the point of combos when any enemy can do a sudden red attack during your combo which then is an unavoidable hit? Why have A.I. companions when they are useless in every way imaginable? Why use spells when they barely affect anything? Why use anything beyond normal attacks since everything else lowers your spirit harshly? Even then, normal attacks do nothing against bosses so it is simply wait for parry windows and counter with one heavy attack. Rinse repeat forever. The moral system is also terrible. It is essentially a system that requires grinding to make any boss fight manageable in the slightest. Oh but then you died during the boss fight, sorry, you lose some of that moral for the boss and ALL OF IT down to your current minimum for the area. Why yes, I definitely want to spend 20 more minutes of my time slicing down these incredibly generic enemies over and over again in the bland as hell environments every time I die to the boss. They even throw in many spongey enemies that aren't even worth the effort whatsoever. Most enemies have the exact same framework to their attacks: Long windup, fast delivery. This was a crutch for difficulty used in Elden Ring, now fully adopted by Wo Long. And when you are fighting these boring enemies, you then may lose moral in the process if any red attacks hit you or you may just randomly lose two moral levels for no reason whatsoever. The only thing you can do to alleviate any of this trash at least a little bit is find the flag placements but that too is a tedious affair since the environments are so painfully dull and uninteresting. Matches the story to a tee. Even with the flags, you will still be outmatched in most circumstances.

I don't think I've ever played a soulslike that was this against the player and is this unfun. I thought after defeating Zhang Liang, possibly the worst opening boss fight in history, that the game would become manageable and more enjoyable. It was for a little bit, but it is obvious that these devs quickly ran out of ideas and just use hilariously artificial difficulty as an excuse. Boss fights are tedious affairs where you whack them with your weapon to deal next to no damage and parry more than in Sekiro, even though the mechanics here are far, far worse. I got to Zhang Jiao and lost all interest at that point. Why should I continue? What is the purpose? To experience a story that is generic and cliched? To fight more of the same enemies a million times? To run through generic environments one after the other? To run into another slog of a boss fight where you fight, die, grind for moral, die, grind, die, grind and then when you finally perfect the boss after hours, your reward is the exact same cycle I described above. I could smash my face against a wall over and over and have just as much fun.

Frankly, I am sick and tired of developers acting as if they can just trot out garbage like this into a genre that actually has a point for being what it is. Simply copying the skeleton of Dark Souls and calling it a day results in **** games like this. The Surge games have a new buddy in this regard in Wo Long. The only positive is that this is on Game Pass so I didn't waste my money because I could set $70 on fire and have just as worthwhile of an experience.

I expected the combat at least to be fun, but after several bosses I want to hurl my controller through my monitor. The almost exclusive reliance of this deflection mechanic is terrible for me and many others, it seems. The morale system is stupid and broken, reducing itself if you don't deflect.
I loved Nioh and really loved Nioh 2.. but this game is torture. When you finally win you just don't care. And the gear... talk about repetitive and boring. The only thing worse is the level design.

    I want my money back.
